Hello all, While doing a study looking at quality of life with HIV,
many people had questions about medications and adherence. So we are
doing another study trying to understand adherence to HIV medications
(HAART etc), if you are interested in partcipating, we greatly
appreciate it.  The survey takes about 20 minutes.  It's somewhat a new
area so I am open to thoughts on the subject. Thanks, Michael

Sounds like you're duplicating UCSF's "Balance Project" about adherence
and side effects.

I already know what a study will find, that HIV patients have a very
difficult time adhering to their medication schedule.  After all, we
are talking about the same group of people that have trouble adhering
to wearing a condom each and every time they have sex.  Naturally,
all study participants will say they "faithfully" adhere to their
medication schedule, but like those gays who claim the same thing when
asked about condom use, if pressed sufficiently the "always" becomes
"usually," followed by "often" and "sometimes" to "never."  My stoopid
tard of a brother "always" practiced safe sex, but that wasn't really
true at all and so he now has AIDS and his assurances that he was
"always" taking his HIV meds regularly were soon discovered to be
"sometimes" followed by "never" until the anal warts would break out
and encourage him to start taking his meds again.  So for the last 6
months, mommie dearest has been babysitting him and forcing him to
take his pills and watching him swallow them each time because he is
such a pathological liar.

Outside of an institutional setting, where HIV patients are monitored
to make sure they actually swallow their pills each and every time
without exception, no study is going to discover actual real-world
compliance rates because they will either lie outright or in their
typical drugged-out stupor they will honestly forget whether they
took their pills or not.  Sounds like just another waste of taxpayer
money.

Am I that obvious?

And just for fun, I live in the Diablo Valley area of East Bay now.
Satan must have manipulated fate to bring me here...  The only thing
I can't figure out is why the locals act so shocked when they see
my pentagram.  What do they expect living in the Valley of Satan?

Hey, thanks for the info on the balance project I had not been aware of
the work.  My interest here was that people with HIV are very adherent
to medication (about 90% compared to about 50% for other types of
chronic illness) but it appears many physicians (about 30%) do not
perscribe medical regimens (or medications) still to people they do not
think will follow thier meds. The idea for the research was to help all
people with HIV to get proper treatment.  But we are doing this on our
own, no government funding, so it is a work in progress thanks for the
input.
