West Nile vs. HIV

I just moved to the SF Bay Area and in the last few days the local media had
been in utter hysterics over the first reported cases of West Nile virus in
the city.  One case in SF and last night another case in a nearby community.
No birds have tested positive so far, so it is believed they contracted the
virus elsewhere, possibly Sacramento.

Anyway, the hysterical media reported the grim statistics, that while most
people suffer mild flu-like symptoms, 1 in 1500 can actually DIE from the
virus!  It's especially disturbing because people with HIV are at increased
risk of dying from it.

Naturally, the fact that HIV kills 1500 out of 1500 who contract it is lost
on the local media, they don't care at all.  Tens of thousands of people in
the city carry HIV and are spreading it a record rates, no big deal.  ONE
person with West Nile (and it isn't believed to be transmissable directly
person to person) and utter hysteria.  And my guess is that the hysteria
over it is only because it has a disproportionate impact on AIDS patients.

Dear Uncle Jimbo,

It is understandable that locals are hysterical about west nile.  Its
arrival means
it is here (there) to stay and never to leave.  Most people infected
with HIV
are at no greater or lesser risk of catching the disease but they are at
a
slightly higher risk of having their health more compromised if they
turn out to be
one of the few people who have a predisposition for west nile
complications that could
ultimately result in death in rare circumstances.

But you and your buddies and sweethearts have to do the same thing as
every other
person in the Bay Area just like people with HIV, you have to wear long
sleeves, wear
insect repellent and hope for the best.

maybe the mosquitoes will wear condoms so as not to infect their
partner.

LOL!

While the condomless sex club internet-spawned SF fuckfest continues
unabated, somebody in the San Francisco Health Department is
actually worried about a silly-assed mosquito bite!

Which was my point in the original message.  And I was listening to
the TV in the background earlier and they did a local edition segment
talking about the budget crisis facing the federal Ryan White program
that guarantees payment for HIV drugs.  The person being interviewed
expressed her deep concern over the budget crisis, how it would
especially affect nearby San Francisco (but conveniently didn't
mention why).  My thought was that if they are facing a budget crisis
then they should be working as hard as they can to prevent as many
new HIV infections as possible so the limited Ryan White funds can
be used to continue treating the existing AIDS patients.  Of course
that thought is heresy, the only possible solution is to get the feds
to dump yet another trillion dollars on the program.

The concept of prevention is well taken, however, it was obvious
very long ago that the SF Health Dept was probably a silent
partner for all the sex clubs and internet "hook up" sites.

Something to do with job security for those sleazebags.

After all, EVERYONE knows how even the mention of the word
"condom" doesn't get the "date" - or worse (like, what the
f.ck ELSE do you got?)
