South African HIV Treatment Activist Has Heart Attack
The widely known South African HIV treatment advocate Zachie Achmat was
hospitalized on March 24 after having a heart attack.
A spokesperson for Achmat's advocacy group said that the heart attack was
probably a result of stress, Achmat's weight and a lack of physical
activity; Achmat, 42, also suggested that his HIV status may have been a
cause. He and doctors said it was unlikely that the heart attack was
related to the HIV medications he began taking more than a year ago.
_______
Why would they say that when heart attacks are the SECOND MOST COMMON
'SIDE EFFECT' OF HAART MEDICATIONS?
What a pathetic lie. Anyone can see through it.

DENMARK: AIDS Drug Cocktails May Double Heart Risk
Wall Street Journal (02.24.05) - Thursday, February 24, 2005
Marilyn Chase AIDS drug cocktails may double the risk of heart attacks,
a risk comparable with smoking cigarettes, University of Copenhagen
researcher Dr. Jens Lundgren said at the 12th Conference on
Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston. Lundgren's study
reported 277 heart attacks among 23,441 AIDS patients whose median age
was 39.
"You wouldn't expect myocardial infarcts [heart attacks] in that
young a population," Lundgren said at a news conference.
Lundgren emphasized that the risk of heart attack in AIDS patients
taking drug cocktails is greatly shadowed by the huge life-expectancy
gains that result from the drugs. In 1995, before the era of HAART, the
AIDS death rate was 23 percent a year; it is currently 1.5 percent to 2
percent a year among treated patients, he noted.
AIDS patients taking HAART should try to alter lifestyle risk factors
such as diet, said Lundgren. Cholesterol-lowering drugs and smoking
cessation should be considered. "If you smoke, you increase risk 1 to
twofold," Lundgren said. "If you quit, your heart forgives you."
Separately at the conference, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the
National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases and the government's top AIDS research scientist,
warned that the days of double-digit funding increases for AIDS are
over for now, with health concerns like bioterrorism, SARS, and avian
influenza competing for dollars.
"We have to face the challenge of making the most of scientific
opportunities in drugs and vaccines" during times of fiscal restraint,
said Fauci, speaking at an afternoon preview of a policy speech to be
delivered Wednesday evening, However, he denied a recent report that
NIH would curtail its vaccine research.

“…In the abacavir-lamivudine-zidovudine [AZT] group, one death was
attributed to hypersensitivity reaction that occurred following
rechallenge with abacavir approximately three weeks after initiating study
treatment, and two were attributed to cardiac arryhthmia and myocardial
infarction [heart attack] occurring 30 to 35 weeks after initial study
treatment. ”

Yup Anti-Viral medications are powerful drugs that have serious side effects
one of which for some of the drugs is a higher risk for hart disease. In
some groups of long term AIDS patients hart disease is the leading cause of
death that is true.
What you ignore is that these people would have died in the mid 90's with
the drugs. So you make the choice 10 or more years of life and the potential
for life shortening side effects or death. It was an easy choice for me I
chose to live and take the risk though others might choose differently.
I don't know anyone who did choose to avoid the anti-virals and who was at
my stage of AIDS when the PI's came onto the scene as a treatment for HIV
and AIDS and who are still alive today so it seems I made the correct
choice.

hello, gary
that might be true! if those people didnt take medication, whos imuum
system were failing, they would have passed away!
there are alot of people who didnt take medication and are still alive and
doing well! so why are these people doing wel without medication!
so now you know about the dangers of hiv medication! doesnt that "scare"
you! isnt it better now to look for another approch!
a question came up!
long turm non progresser! how can you know if you are one of them! because
takeing hiv meds is thae last thing i would do!

Yep.
>there are alot of people who didnt take medication and are still alive and
>doing well! so why are these people doing wel without medication!
Possibly because their CD4 count is still high and not falling so
rapidly. Some people progress more slowly or are more recently
infected.
>so now you know about the dangers of hiv medication! doesnt that "scare"

Side effects are scary. So--what other approach would you suggest?

You know if you are a long term non- or slow progressor by the fact
that the CD4 count stays in the normal range for many years. Most
people, tho, are NOT and see the CD4 count decline. When the T cells
go down, a person is at greater and greater risk of infections that
can be fatal.

Not true Gary. You persist in clinging to the outright lie that HAART
reduced 'AIDS' deaths.
The truth as I have established again and again and again is the death
rate declined years before the widespread use of HAART.
HAART kills not so called 'AIDS'.
Gary Stein - 11 Apr 2005 19:02 GMT
To correct you Paul you have made that claim but NEVER been able to show any
evidence that back up your claim.
There are simply of hundreds of studies that show beyond doubt that HAART
has increased the life span of those who use it. There has been a steady
decline in AIDS deaths in the US since the advent of multi-drug anti-viral
treatments. Yes the rate begin to slow during the two drug stage before PI's
hit the market but the actual decline did not occur until the 3 drug
treatment was in general use.

Oh really! You must be either blind on brain dead....or both.
I have proved that point with over thirty articles and links. It is no
longer in contention.....except by you.
Gary Stein - 12 Apr 2005 18:17 GMT
Paul to correct you yet again it is only the dissident community that
continues to look at studies issued about AZT in the early 1990's then
perverting there findings into something that somehow has relevance today.
Not only have you misrepresented the findings of the Concord study but you
insist it applies to all anti-virals which is simply absurd on it's face.

We look at studies on HAART now and see exactly the same thing.
The only perversion of the truth is by you and your fellow 'AIDS'
criminals.
I see no other honest way to discribe you folks.
Gary Stein - 13 Apr 2005 23:12 GMT
Show me one such study Paul.
With one condition that you print the entire study abstract not your typical
out of context snippets of text that you think support your statements. Make
sure that you include hyper links to the source of your data and that it be
at least no more then 4 years old.
