Hi:

I have some question for a friend that lives with a cocaine addict.
She says that this guy has been addicted on and off since he was about
14.  They live together as boy friend girl friend.  i don't think he
shares needles.  Once and a while they have peopl go to thier house who
are drug dealers.  She does not take drugs.

The guy is a hard worker and pays his share of the bills but on top of
being a cocaine addict he also drinks.

My first question is:

Since he has been able to get off cocaine before is there a proven
remedy for staying off?  If so what is it?

My second question is:

Should she keep living with this guy or should she kick him out since
she owns the house...if he doesn't "straighten-up"?

Thanks in advanced for any reply.

We are all highly motivated by the desire for pleasure and the desire
to avoid pain. The practicing druggie or alcholic is still convinced
that what they are doing is pleasuable, no matter how painful an
experience it really is. He or she needs to reprogramme his or her
mind, to convince himself or herself that what they previously
considered pleasurable is actually a pain.

It is often said that the druggie or alcoholic needs to reach "rock
bottom" before they can change. This rock bottom can be any traumatic
or painful experience resulting from the use of drugs or alcohol which
finally convinces the druggie or alcoholic of the lucancy of their
actions. Unfortunately, some druggies and alcholics only reach their
rock bottoms when they are six foot under.
