According to the US Census Bureau, the mortality
in the UK is 10 per 1000 of the population. That is
1.0% of the population.

http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/ipc/idbsum?cty=uk

Stats SA counted 499,000 death notification forms
in the year 2002.
There are 47,000,000 people in South Africa, which
makes for a mortality of 10.6 per 1,000 or 1.06%.

Mortality:

South Africa: 10.6 per 1,000
UK: 10 per 1,000

Get your facts straight and don't make up your own, Check out
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/ipc/idbsum?cty=sf for stats on South
africa - big difference! and in 10-20 years time there will be a
negative population growth because of deaths.

Why don't you stop making up that I am "making up your own"?

There is no way that the US Census Bureau knows BETTER
than Stats SA what Stats SA found when it did it's own
headcounts and population surveys. Or with their Death
Notification Form survey.
The US Census Bureau will be the first to admit that.

499,000 death notification forms in 2002. 47,000,000
South Africans. Divide the two numbers - oh, excuse me,
"make up your own figures" - and tell me the mortality
rate in South Africa is not 1.06%.

In "10 - 20 years time there will be a negative population growth"?
I'm glad that you are so clairvoyant, when the rest of us are
struggling with the data of the present.

Anyway, you must understand that the data for coming decades
is based on projections.
The data from Stats SA is based on _surveys_. Headcounts.

No Alex only you struggle to read data

I just took the data from the SAME place that you got data for UK.

Good old Stats SA: from their website:
http://www.statssa.gov.za/news_archive/17sep2004_1.asp
"It is estimated that the population will decline from 45.2 million in
2004 (approximately 1,4 million less than the official estimate from
Stats) to 40.2 million in 2050 (presumably as a result of HIV
mortality)."
If they can say it, why can't I?
On the same page there is something about the death notification that
is that good as well. Read it if you want to.

Some more stats from other websites: (mortality rates for South
Africa)
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/sf.html
20.54 deaths/1,000 population (2004 est.)

http://www.worldpress.org/profiles/south_africa.cfm
Population growth rate:  0.26% (2001 est.)
Birth rate:  21.12 births/1,000 population (2001 est.)
Death rate:  16.77 deaths/1,000 population (2001 est.)

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0107983.html
Population (2004 est.): 42,718,530 (growth rate: –0.2%); birth rate:
18.4/1000; infant mortality rate: 62.2/1000; life expectancy: 44.2;
density per sq mi: 91

http://www.appliedlanguage.com/country_guides/south_africa_country_people.shtml
Population growth rate      -0.25% (2004 est.)
Birth rate     18.38 births/1,000 population (2004 est.)
Death rate     20.54 deaths/1,000 population (2004 est.)

Dear Porkchop,

Read on a little, and you will find that the head of Stats SA is quoting
the UNPF report called "State of the world population: 2004" when
it was released in 2004.

You will also read that he disagrees with their estimates:

"In conclusion, the extreme assumptions of HIV prevalence rates,
the associated mortality rates and the implied impact of HIV on
South African society, suggested by the report are questioned."
