I'll admit that it seems rare, but oral transmission by kissing has been
documented. One case I read about involved a married couple, one HIV+
and the other HIV-, who always used condoms. Yet the other got infected
and after investigating every possiblity, researchers decided it was
transmitted via kissing. Both partners had poor gums and it was
speculated that one partner's gums were bleeding slightly and the
other partner's gums were inflamed enough to allow the virus to enter
the bloodstream. Still highly unlikely and I recall reading that
saliva - unlike blood and semen, is non-saline, which causes damage
to both bacteria and viruses. Still, despite the low risk of
transmission, kissing a person with HIV is gross.

Ah!
Let's put it this way. You meet someoone you know to be HIV
positive. This person is wonderful, funny and warm. All the
necessary factors for falling in love are present. The amazing thing
is that this talented, clever, accomplished being even seems to like
you. A friendship develops. Sharing happens. For most of the time
you forget about HIV status and just think about the person. A kiss
is exchanged. Does love conquer prejudice against HIV?
Kissing people one loves is not gross.
